Eugene Kara is a sculptor and multidisciplinary artist specialising in bronze casting. Join us for a koorero to learn more about his works featured in our exhibition Toi is Rongoaa.

Kara established Te Ahi Koomau bronze Foundry at the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts, Te Puia, Rotorua. Kara is based in Rotorua and has been active in the Arts sector as a practitioner and advocate for over 20 years.

Kara’s practice has produced works for both gallery and outdoor spaces. He is currently the Lead co-ordinator for cultural symbolism for Ngati Koroki, Kahukura. In this role, Kara ensures Mana Whenua korero is represented through Toi for new Local and Central government infrastructure.

Toi is Rongoaa celebrates fourteen contemporary Maaori artists who believe in the importance of creative practice to their wellbeing. The invited artists have been supported by Creative New Zealand to make new work and share this essential kaupapa with our community.
