Gavin Hipkins: The Homely II

This exhibition is the long-awaited sequel to New Zealand artist Gavin Hipkins’ celebrated series, The Homely (1997-2001), a frieze of 80 photographs that Hipkins has described as a ‘post colonial gothic novel’.
Entirely shot with an amateur film camera, The Homely ll (2001-17) evokes the sense of unease that young nations face in defining nationhood. It explores our differences and similarities with the United Kingdom by shuffling and combining locations to form a fragmented narrative of disorienting strange-yet-familiar scenes.
Gavin Hipkins: The Homely II is toured by City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi and was first exhibited as part of its exhibition This Is New Zealand.
