Waitangi Day

Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato is committed to celebrating Waitangi Day and commemorating the signing of the Treaty with our Kirikiriroa citizens with an event based on pre-colonial past and post-colonial cultural exchange. Our programme is interactive, and we encourage our visitors to take part, listen, learn, watch, make and take something meaningful away.

Programme

10.30am-11am

Welcome, waiata and kapa haka with Taniwha Ventures

11am-12pm       

The University of Waikato Associate Professor/Manukura Tom Roa talks about Tainui iwi, Tiriti o Waitangi and the resultant history 

(Due to unforeseen circumstances, Dr Tom Roa’s guest lecture has had to be cancelled.)

11am-1pm         

Maaori Arts and Crafts – Poi Workshop with Taniwha Ventures

Poi Actions Workshop with Taniwha Ventures 

Ngaa Taonga Taakaro (traditional Maaori games) with Taniwha Ventures 

11am-1pm        

Live Weaving and Tipare Workshop (headbands and bracelets) with Louanna Garmonsway and Ngamane Stanley.

2pm-4pm

Maaori Arts and Crafts – Poi Workshop with Mareikura Creations

Performances: 

  • 2pm Maaori performing arts:  performance and workshop - Entertainment Suite - Taiohi Manawataki
  • 3pm Maaori performing arts:  performance and workshop - Mau Rakau

 

Children taking part in the workshops must be accompanied by an adult.
