Te Huringa - Turning Points

1 May - 1 September 2010

Pakeha Colonisation and Maori Empowerment

1 May - 1 September 2010

Te Huringa - Te uira
Te Uira by Robert Atkinson, 1889

This exhibition offers both Maori and Pakeha curatorial perspectives on the themes of colonisation, power and a shared world. This unique approach to the exhibition storyline illustrates how the interpretation of art can differ according to the cultural background of the viewer.

The works chart a visual history of this country’s journey from early European contact (the earliest works in the exhibition are hand coloured engravings of Māori architecture, weaponry and utensils from 1826), through settlement, colonisation, protest, to mana renewed.

The exhibition, curated by Peter Shaw and Dr. Jo Diamond, includes work by Francis Dillon Bell, Shane Cotton, Charles Goldie, Michael Hight, Robyn Kahukiwa, Peter Robinson, and Gordon Walters

Te Huringa – Turning Points, is an exhibition of paintings from the collections of the Fletcher Trust and Sarjeant Gallery Te Whare o Rehua Whanganui.
