Maaori astronomer and maramataka toohunga, Piripi Lambert, will present a free public talk as part of Waikato Museum's Matariki celebrations.
Piripi will share his knowledge of Matariki and maatauranga Tainui. He will touch on the traditional names of the stars in the Matariki cluster and when the ancestors would watch for its rising to usher in the new year.
He will also discuss the Te Paki o Matariki, the coat of arms of the Kiingitanga, and its mystic symbolism. Listen as he unravels the genealogy of the 12 chiefly stars of the Supreme Being and their connection to the toohunga class of the Tainui Whare Wananga.

Please note
For te reo Maaori, Waikato Museum uses double vowels (uu) in place of vowels with a macron (ū) to represent a long vowel sound. This spelling approach is the preference of tangata whenua in Hamilton Kirikiriroa and Waikato iwi for te reo Maaori words.
