Waitohu

28 November 2020 - 8 February 2021

Waitohu looks at the varied use of the language of carving marks, shadow and pattern in contemporary Maaori art. It is a diverse exhibition – involving photography, painting, glass, ceramic, mixed media and sculpture.

There are numerous links and conversations in this exhibition, collapsing the space between carving and painting. Sir Apirana Ngata’s memorable phrase praising the ‘shadow carving’ of painting is
a concept that sits at the centre of this conversation.

Waikato Museum is the sole North Island venue for this exhibition which includes works by Brett Graham, Chris Bailey, Robert Jahnke, Israel Birch, Lisa Reihana, Reuben Paterson, Peata Larkin, Darryn George, John Walsh,

Education programmes are available for this exhibition.
