This is the 18th year of the National Contemporary Art Award (NCAA) which launched in 2000. This year’s award is judged by the Director of Wellington’s City Gallery, Elizabeth Caldwell, and is managed by Waikato Museum. The winner of the 2016 National Contemporary Art Award, Sorawit Songsataya, received S20,000 from the major sponsors, Tompkins Wake and Chow:Hill Architects Ltd.

Elizabeth Caldwell has been working in the New Zealand visual arts sector for more than 25 years.
Professional roles prior to her present position as Director at City Gallery Wellington include, Director of the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, Senior Curator Visual Art and Collection Services at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, Arts Adviser for Visual Art and Craft/Object Art at Creative New Zealand Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery (now Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu).
Her academic qualifications include an MA in Art History from the University of Canterbury, Diploma of Secondary Teaching (Christchurch College of Education) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Art Curatorial Studies (University of Melbourne).
