On 25 July 1981, New Zealanders disrupted a rugby match to be played between Waikato and South Africa as part of the controversial Springbok Tour.

Now, on the 40th anniversary of the Springbok Rugby Tour, Commissioner Meng Foon comes to Waikato Museum to speak about positive race relations in present-day Aotearoa New Zealand.

Meng Foon was appointed Race Relations Commissioner in 2019. A second-generation Chinese New Zealander, he is fluent in English, Cantonese and te reo Māori.

Prior to joining the Human Rights Commission Te Kāhui Tika Tangata, he served as Mayor of Gisborne, a role he held for 18 years. Commissioner Foon has been chair of Gisborne/Tai Rāwhiti Rugby League, and is a member of New Zealand Rugby League.
