Interstellar Writing Competition

We invite entries to the writing competition co-hosted by Hamilton Book Month and Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato.

Visit and explore the exhibition, then respond to the visual storytelling with your own poems and short stories. Base your written competition entry on any aspect that captures your imagination.

One entry per person, which can be prose or poetry. There is no charge for entry.

Maximum length is equivalent of one A4 page or 40 lines of poetry, in 12pt font.

Email your entry to competition.hbm@gmail.com with the subject line: Interstellar Writing Competition.

In the body of the email state:

  • Your full name and your age if under 16
  • The title of your piece
  • Which character or characters you are responding to and, if you like, a short explanation (no more than 50 words)
  • Your contact phone number
  • Your entry

Entries to be received by 20 August.

Winner and runners up will be contacted and invited to read at the National Poetry Day Open Mic event at The Long Room on Wintec’s city campus on Friday 27 August, 6:30-8:00pm when the competition results will be announced.

Terms and conditions: Entries close at 5pm, 13 August 2021. The prizes include book vouchers and a small family pass to Exscite. Winners will be contacted by phone/email. Employees of Hamilton City Council and their immediate family members are not eligible to enter.
