Flat-pack Whakapapa Floor Talk
26 September 2020
Artist Dr Maureen Lander MNZM (Ngaapuhi, Te Hikutu hapuu) was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Maaori Art this year. She creates taonga, usually in the form of large installations embedded with the knowledge of generations of weavers.
As the whenu (strands) taken into the commencement whiri (braiding) on a kete help determine the potential size, colour range and whakairo (patterning), the process of making reflects family, kinship and genetic heritage. Maureen discusses her installation Flat-pack Whakapapa, the relationships built up with weavers in the community, and how her artistic practice has evolved within a framework of whakapapa.
