"Passenger Rail in the Waikato, 1920-2020: Slow Decline or Hope for the Future?"

7 December 2019

2-3pm

Free event

Join Dr André Brett and hear about passenger rail in the Waikato – past, present and future. A century ago, passenger rail services ran throughout the region. First the local services disappeared, and then the intercity expresses. What happened? Why? And might they come back?

André Brett is a Vice-Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow in History at the University of Wollongong. He has an interest in trans-Tasman and Australasian history.

André has recently written a manuscript on the expansion and contraction of New Zealand's passenger railways, in collaboration with mapmaker Sam van der Weerden. Publication details for this book are to be confirmed; the working title is Can't Get There from Here: New Zealand's Shrinking Passenger Rail Network, 1920–2020.
