Matariki ki Te Whare Taonga o Waikato - Taatai Whetuu

Our Matariki in the Museum is an interactive day where you can take part, listen, learn, watch, make and take something meaningful about Matariki away with you.

 

10.30am - 11am: Mihi Whakatau, Waiata (Marae Aatea)

 

11am - 1pm: Whakapapa Wananga (Lecture theatre)

Join Manukau Lewis as he acknowledges Tainui tuupuna depicted in the carvings of our Whare Waka. This koorero and workshop will be of interest to those who wish to further explore their Tainui whakapapa.

1pm - 1.30pm: Transformations - From the Roots Up (Lecture theatre)

Meet with Shepherd Isaac, a co-creator of an animation "Totara, a story from the roots up" which tells the story of the changes the Totara tree has seen, and how we, the community can restore its habitat. Shepherd is joining us to show the animation and talk about his role in the community and restoration work committed to improving Waikato environment for today and for future generations.

 

1.30pm - 3.30pm: Taniwha Ventures - Matariki performance and interactive demonstration (Marae Aatea)

2pm - 3pm: Lecture and workshop - Ka aho mai te whetuu - the shining star (Lecture theatre)

Curator Poutiaki Whakataki Maree Mills (Ngaati Tuwharetoa) takes direction from our tuupuna to cope with accelerated change. This lecture and workshop is directed at creative practitioners who need tools to help them navigate a faster future.

11am - 4.30pm: A Cluster of stars - Weaving (Gallery 12a)

Local artists will be working on their projects and demonstrating their love of weaving. Please come and watch, ask questions about the process and learn from their skill.
