“On January 9, 2016, well known Waikato artist, Paul Judd died. He was 66 years old. His most popular works possess an element of quirky wry humour as they explore the perennial themes linked to the journey of life. He presented this human fraught passage in two major formats. The first involved a ubiquitous small boat with one or two passengers, each possessed of a generic appearance, facing forward, looking sternly and intently ahead, bodies stiffly presented as if they were clenched in an attitude of strained moral attention.

The second group comprised the same kind of people, travelling this time in single winged stub-nosed aeroplanes, dressed for the part in goggles and helmet, like some kind of Douglas Bader or Biggles figure, ready to fight the good fight. These stylized images became a motif Judd reworked many times, so that they became part of his signature style.” - Peter Dornauf.
