A Sweeter Ride and Other Works by Paul Judd b. 1950 d. 2016

3 May - 30 June 2019

Free entry

For Paul Judd, making art was the ‘sweetest ride’.  Planes, boats, and caryatids; Judd’s art is loaded with imagery that he absorbed during his travels all over Europe, Asia, North Africa, and from his life in Aotearoa New Zealand. He developed a deep appreciation of classical Greek architecture, philosophy, and mythology. Signifiers of freedom and journeying, especially air and sea craft, found their place in Judd’s visual language. The process of nurturing an idea and working with it over time is obvious in Judd’s practice. If you look carefully, you can see the connections between the more abstracted works as they move toward the figurative.

Sadly, in January 2016, Judd’s ride ended. This exhibition is part survey, part memorial.

Education programmes are available for this exhibition.
