Have fun at the Museum these school holidays. Leave the children with us to enjoy supervised, tutored programmes.
Books Outside the Box – 3D Book Scenes
Monday 9 July
Create a pop-up scene from your favourite story using real book covers to contain your 3D creation. Based on scenes from the Be Persuaded: Jane Austen Experience exhibition, children will craft backdrops and characters to ‘pop’ when their book cover is opened.
Get over it!
Tuesday 10 July
Look for FUN in the fundamentals of construction! Learn how bridges work and design and build one to take home. Explore the history of bridges from Da Vinci’s time to Hamilton’s own.
Nooks and Crannies - Curiosity Boxes
Wednesday 11 July
Bring along some tiny treasures and small surprises to display in your own curiosity box. Children will create a simple hangable display case which they will wallpaper and paint and exhibit items on. Bring along any small things children like to collect, magazine cutouts, favourite photos etc.
Get wired
Thursday 12 July
Explore electrical energy, its flow and how it is converted into other forms of energy. Create from the materials supplied a version of the classic board game Operation.
Stars in Our Eyes - Matariki Matters
Friday 13 July
Celebrate and learn more about this special event, while creating star-inspired art and crafts. Children will make a Matariki-themed mobile using a variety of materials, as well as stars, lanterns and other night-sky items.
Me, My Selfie and I
Monday 16 July
Selfies become artworks as children explore various art techniques to create truly individual self-portraits, and learn face-drawing techniques. They’ll have photos taken on arrival, which will form the basis of artworks ranging from a large cell phone picture, grid pictures, and dot pictures.
Off the Press
Tuesday 17 July
Explore printmaking processes without a press! Learn about techniques and materials that you can continue to use at home to make beautiful one-off and series of printed artworks.
Spectacular Slime Challenge
Wednesday 18 July
Slime vs. kinetic sand. Get ready to get messy with all sorts of recipes and delve into this irresistible tactile matter in depth. Measure and mix, knead and play.
Body Talk II
Thursday 19 July
Explore the human figure as a storyteller. Learn drawing tricks and unite them with storytelling tips to create an illustrated scene with figures in action.
Fashionista Friday
Friday 20 July
Looking at the past, present, and future of fashion. It’s dress-up time so plan your own wearable wonder, make a model and dress it up!
If booking for multiple children for more than one programme: Enter each of their details for the first programme they are attending, then use the drop-down box labelled 'Copy data from' to save re-entering the information.
Terms and Conditions
Programmes must be booked and paid for online by 10pm the day prior to selected programme. Bookings are not confirmed until payment is received.
Registrations must be completed by a parent or guardian of the child enrolled over the age of 18 years old.
For health and safety reasons, children must be aged 7-13 to attend. Please do not be offended if we ask for proof of age of your child/children.
Enrolment
You must book and supply complete enrolment details for each child. A copy of this will be emailed to you.
Cancellation
Once accepted registrations are final. If your child/children cannot attend a booked programme, we require 24 hours' notice of cancellation to issue a refund. Email us to notify.
Unless required by law, transfers or refunds (partial or full) are not issued except in extenuating circumstances and at the sole discretion of Waikato Museum.
Programme supervision
The everyday programme ratio is one teacher to 10 children. Depending on the activity, some programmes require more supervision.
Children will be in view of staff at all times when appropriate.
Children will be informed of the boundaries and are expected to stay within them.
Children are not to leave the supervised area.
Children misbehaving to such a level that it causes disruption to the programme and others will be removed and their parents/caregivers will be contacted to collect them.
Children who are too unwell to participate will be assessed and the appropriate action taken to assist them. Parents/caregivers will be contacted in the first instance and in most cases will be asked to collect their child/children.
What to bring
Suitable clothing must be worn e.g. outdoor activities require a warm jacket in the winter or a sunhat in the summer.
Children must bring appropriate, healthy food for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, and a labelled drink bottle.
Timing
Full day programmes are from 8.30am – 5pm. The tutored portion of each day's session concludes at 3.30pm. Between 3.30pm and when you pick up your child, they wind down by watching a movie in our lecture theatre.
Children must be collected at or before 5pm. If you are more than 10 minutes late to pick up your child/children, a $10 fee will apply per child.
Parking is available in the Museum car park (paid) accessible on the north side Victoria Street entrance of ArtsPost or on Grantham Street (2 and 3-hour limit).
