30 Years on Grantham Street

To mark Waikato Museum's 30 years at its Grantham Street site, a series of exhibitions and events will celebrate its forerunner institutions, highlights of the three decades of operation, the diversity of our collection, and our role in the community.

Te Haerenga The Journey: 
Toward Te Whare Taonga o Waikato

5 August - 26 November
Thirty years ago this October, a purpose-built museum and art gallery opened in Grantham Street, Hamilton. This event was the culmination of years of planning and community activism. More.

Ngaa Taonga: Treasures from Waikato Museum 
Te Whare Taonga o Waikato

1 September - 29 October
The Museum houses over 30,000 artefacts including taonga Maaori, art, social history and science. This exhibition celebrates some of the treasures from the Museum’s collection.

Wikuki Kingi, Master Carver from Kirikiriroa Marae, will share the history and significance of the carvings in Te Whare o Te Winika.

Join Salina Ghazally for a lively talk about the science treasures in the Ngaa Taonga exhibition.

Conal McCarthy Talk: Museums and Indigenous People

29 October, 3pm-4pm, free event.
Hear how the relationship between museums and heritage and indigenous people has changed in the last three decades.

the Waikato River

18 November, 2pm-3pm, free event.
Dr Marama Muru-Lanning (Waikato Tainui, Ngaati Maniapoto) shares stories about her personal connection to the river and its significance to Waikato Maaori.
