About the Artist - Jan Kocian
In his native CzechRepublic, he completed five years of formal study in traditional glass blowing, and further developed his skills in various European studios.
Jan was captivated by glass from the moment he watched a glowing vessel emerge from a blazing kiln.
Now living in the Coromandel Jan has transformed an old steam engine museum into what is now his studio. Having embraced the “can do” kiwi culture, Jan has made good use of the adjacent railway engineering facilities making most of his specialist tools and equipment by hand. Jan brings different techniques and experience to the New Zealand glassblowing community. He blows and sculpts his glass actively, standing rather than sitting at a table. He uses a range of wooden moulds to smoothly shape blown pieces and purpose built steel tools for sculpting
