Between the Worlds
Sybille Schlumbom a.k.a. billadonna and Elizabeth Barton
22 December 2017 - 22 January 2018
Between the Worlds explores the grey zone that surrounds transitional areas - between countries, cultures, genders, life and death.
For Sybille Schlumbom a.k.a. billadonna, a child of German post World War II, full of curiosity that ultimately led to immigration, birds and bird creatures have become synonymous for a life in transitu.
In between the world you encounter characters whose natural habitat is the transitional grey zone.
The beaked creatures, referencing plague doctors, bird women, flightless birds, winged minds.
Fun, weird, colourful, larger than life - slightly disturbing.
They are not at home in this world or any other, but confidently found a sense of belonging in their kinship.
Elizabeth Barton has long felt a kinship with the mysterious in nature, with dreams, alchemy and the Occult, which will forms much of the subject matter in this exhibition. A fascination with prophecy, visions, and visitations from the Other World will feature, drawn from Maaori mythology, early New Zealand history, and allusions to Egyptian myth. Expect a playful discursion with visual puns, as part of an indeterminate reality.
