Pizza cutter? That’s my paint brush
2 March 2018 - 2 April 2018
A selection of recent works, semi-abstract, machine-sewn, each created to tell a story, designed for both the wall and the bed.
The title, Pizza cutter? That’s my paint brush, refers to the rotary cutter which is used to cut fabric shapes in a similar way to a painter using a brush on canvas. These works begin as sketches on my tablet, similar-shaped pieces are cut from fabric and pinned on a large display board. The initial idea is modified and refined as colour and shape are added.
This description emphasises the change from a historical approach of beginning with a pattern and cutting these pieces with scissors. Scissors have been largely supplanted by the rotary cutter but many contemporary quilt makers continue to use patterns or to carefully copy from photographs.
