Richard Horner was born in Devonport, England, and immigrated to Auckland where he attended Takapuna Grammar School. An early inspiration was his art teacher, Owen Lee, and when the opportunity to study art finished in the sixth form, he left school to become a cartographer. Art took a back seat until the 1970s when the urge to paint and draw returned and has never gone away.
A love of the land and sea has led to landscapes being his favoured subject. He has exhibited in several group and solo exhibitions around New Zealand and had commissions from as far afield as the United States and France. He moved to Cambridge in 2012 and his first Waikato exhibition was at ArtsPost in 2014.
