Children's Day Celebrations to be Held in Hamilton

National Children’s Day will be celebrated in Hamilton next weekend with a range of events throughout the city.

With this year’s theme being ‘Treasure our Children’, the 12th National Children’s Day on Sunday, 4 March aims to provide New Zealanders with an opportunity to give time to children, start new family traditions and continue old ones.

The local events are being organised by community groups, Waikato Museum and Hamilton City Council, and will be held in each sector of the city – north, south, east, west and central – next Saturday, 3 March and Sunday, 4 March.

Hamilton Mayor Julie Hardaker encouraged the public to make the most of the family-based events on in the city.

“Children’s Day is a celebration about those very special young people in our lives.  It's a fun day for everyone, not just the kids, and it's a chance for families to have time together and enjoy some great events around the city,” she said.

The Children’s Day events are:

Central Hamilton:
Waikato Museum, Sunday, 4 March, 10.30am-4.30pm – A ‘Monster Madness’ theme, activities such as flying fox, ‘Howling Hamilton’ tours, Muddy Fun with clay creations, free face painting and the Monster Mash Dance Competition, prizes for children who dress up as a monster and spot prizes throughout the day. Admission is free, with the exception of the usual admission fee for entry to the ‘How to Make a Monster: the Art and Technology of Animatronics’ exhibition.

North Hamilton:
Flagstaff Park, Sunday, 4 March, 1-4pm – Balloon Man, bouncy castles and activities. Organised by Hamilton North East Community Development Trust and Hamilton City Council.

South Hamilton:

Melville Park, Sunday, 4 March, 2-4pm – Local entertainment, mini golf, old fashioned games, bouncy castles and more. Organised by Te Whare Kokonga, Glenview Community Centre, St Luke’s Anglican Church, Hamilton South Baptist and Hamilton City Council.

East Hamilton:
Claudelands Park, Saturday, 3 March, 10.30am-1.30pm – Pacific/Ethnic Children’s Day, old fashioned games, bouncy castles, healthy food, cultural performances, face painting, parade and more. Organised by Hamilton Multicultural Trust, Te Rapakau, SKIP, Hamilton City Council and Healthy Eating Healthy Action (HEHA).

West Hamilton:

Elliot Park, Sunday, 4 March, 2-5pm – Bouncy castles, water slide, old fashioned games, free treats, photo booth and more. Organised by Western Community Centre, Salvation Army and Hamilton City Council.
