Experimental Music Pioneer to Perform at Waikato Museum

Experimental music and digital art pioneer, Wang Fujui will treat Hamilton to a one-off performance at Waikato Museum on Monday 27 August. Taiwan-based arts magazine White Fungus in association with Audio Foundation is bringing the Taipei sound / light installation artist to Hamilton.
Titled The Subconscious Restaurant, the event will take place in the museum’s former restaurant space as part of the Intraspace Project. Intraspace is an exciting initiative developed by Waikato Museum visual arts curator Leafa Wilson where artists interface with non-gallery spaces and respond accordingly.
“It is both an honour and a thrill for us to host such internationally renowned artists as Wang Fujui and White Fungus,” said Leafa Wilson.
“The White Fungus Project in association with Audio Foundation absolutely is one of the best exemplars of art happening in non-gallery spaces associated with Waikato Museum.”
The event will also include a performance by the Korean Wellington-based artist Samin Son, part of his on-going Toothpaste Action Series in which he draws upon his experiences in the Riot Squad of the Korean Military; plus a music performance by EUNAI and a DJ set by The Lost Weekend.
The Subconscious Restaurant is one of a series of five events taking place in New Zealand audiences introducing Wang Fujui to in major centres. The events are kindly supported by Asia New Zealand Foundation.
To accompany the event series, White Fungus is producing a limited edition publication, which will include a history of Taiwanese electronic music by Jeph Lo, a history of DIY music culture in New Zealand by Bruce Russell, a piece about “contemporary values” by Hamish Win, and a new comic by Tim Bollinger. Attendees of The Subconscious Restaurant will receive a free copy of the publication.
White Fungus is a magazine and art project which began in 2004 in Wellington, New Zealand, but is currently based in Taichung City, Taiwan. It was founded by brothers Ron and Mark Hanson.
“Intraspace is a timely project in this era of global economic crisis. It provokes thought about the utilisation and nature of space as well as different ways of engaging with institutional structures. We're excited to be holding our first ever event in Hamilton,” said Ron Hanson, White Fungus co-founder.

Background:
Wang Fujui is one of the pioneers of experimental music and digital art in Taiwan. In 1993, Fujui started noise, the first label and publication about experimental music in Taiwan. He has curated both the Taipei Digital Art Festival and Transonic. As well as performances, Fujui creates installations involving interactivity between sound and light. Fujui is the Head of the Trans-Sonic Lab in the Center for Art and Technology at Taipei National University of the Arts.
White Fungus has held interdisciplinary art events at galleries around the world, including P.P.O.W (New York), Taipei Contemporary Art Center, Artspace (Auckland) and Adam Art Gallery (Wellington). White Fungus was part of the 2012 exhibition Millennium Magazines at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition was a survey of magazines made by contemporary artists since 2000.
